Odds and Ends

Now that the holidays have passed and the initial rush of leveling and heroics has mostly subsided, I am spending most of my time in game either raiding or preparing to raid.  I have been very happy with how my Shaman is playing to this point.  As a healer, I feel that I can compete with any other healing class, and I have the tools I need to get the job done.  As Elemental DPS, I’m having a blast and putting out some very respectable numbers for a part-time DPSer.  I’ve even done some PvP, which I’m realizing is not so bad if you gear up along with everyone else, rather than starting towards the end of an expansion!

I have a few thoughts in mind for upcoming posts.  One will definitely be about the importance of using Purge.  You already know how I feel about interrupting, and Purging is no different.  I’ve been able to find opportunities to Purge in most heroics and raids, and of course it is an amazing ability in PvP.  I would also like to do a post or two about my UI, which allows me to easily see what needs to be purged and interrupted, while also leaving the screen pretty clean so I don’t stand in the fire.  If anyone has any requests for future topics, please let me know and if it’s something I can help with, I’ll add it to the list.

In my mind, Cataclysm is the expansion of the guild.  There are a ton of fun (if not necessary) perks to leveling up your guild, and with the loot normalization on 10 and 25 player raids, there is more reason than ever to seek out a group of like minded folks and progress through the raids as a team.  There is really very little reason to slog through a raid with people you can’t stand just for the loot or progression.

With that in mind, I want to make a small plug for my own guild, The Way, over on Emerald Dream (US).  We are a group of mature (when necessary) adults who like to play with talented players who are also quality human beings.  We raid 3 nights a week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday).  We are not uber-hardcore in our mentality, but we expect raiders to be prepared and push themselves to play at their best.  We’re currently 3/12 on progression, with a new boss dying each night we have raided so far!

We could use a few more like minded folks to ensure we have enough numbers on a consistent basis.  Ranged DPS or Healers who like to raid Mon/Wed would be absolutely ideal.  I know my audience is almost entirely Resto Shamans, and we could probably fit one more in, but if you happen to play another class or know of any friends looking for a place to call home for Cataclysm, we’d love to see you apply.

I’m a beginner healer – have always rolled pure DPS classes in the past. I’m loving my shaman so far (level 40)and have really enjoyed scouting your blog to get tips and hints. Thanks for putting up the information that you do!

I’d love to see some information on healing. Not really exactly what spells to use, but what’s your mindset when you heal? Who are you keeping an eye on (besides the tank) and why? What proactive steps can I take?

Basically I’m looking for the thought process that it takes to be a good healer. I know that basic mantra is ‘don’t let ‘em die’, but who is more expendable? Who is more likely to need heals. I’m new at this, and it’s not feeling as intuitive as DPS has become.

Keep up the good work – I enjoy your blog!

Regarding upcoming class changes, I was just wondering how useful some items (the jc spirit and Core of Ripeness, for example) are going to be.

    - Mana Tide Totem has been redesigned. The totem no longer multiplies the Spirit of those affected by it. It instead gives a flat amount of Spirit equal to 400% of the casting shaman’s Spirit, exclusive of short-term Spirit buffs affecting the shaman when the totem is dropped.

Since it ignores spirit procs now, how much do we actually adore trinkets that grant this as opposed to our other options, such as spell power?

    Hi!

Thx for a great blog, im trying my best to learn the ways of resto shammys and I am now 81. What I would appreciate is some kind of guide to what and where to spend your honor and justice points on. I have looked in SW, Dalaran etc but can only found lvl 80 gear. My goal is to try and gear up for both arenas and raiding so one pvp set and one pve set. Would save tons ot time googling for info if you could put sht up here since I intend to save all points to lvl 85.

    Thx in advance.

I’m also curious how the change to no longer take temporary Spirit bonuses into effect will change trinket recommendations/usage. I’d also love to see some theorycrafting on the new comparison for the cutoff rates for Mastery will be in comparison to Crit, since it is increasing to 3%.

Are you still taking people for your “Pimp My Resto Shaman” feature? You haven’t done any since before Cata, and I’d love to get some feedback. :)

    Grimlit,
There’s a previous post titled Some New Pre-Raid Resto Items on this very site that has all the items you can get out of heroics, justice points, etc. You might try reading that post :) The level 85 jp gear guys are in SW behind the Champion’s Hall in Old Town – just go south through that stone door (which leads out to grassy stable area) and into the building straight ahead. Take a right when you enter and you should see their smiling faces.
